Pro800 Turbo Router review

W
hen we first heard of this dual WAN port router from Nexland, we were excited to get a review unit in. When we heard about the price, our jaw dropped. Only $399!

The Nexland ISB Pro800 Turbo is one of a kind, and is the only consumer priced router with 2 WAN ports. This means that you can not only load balance 2 external connections (one cable modem and one DSL modem) but you can failover! The failover from one connection to another allows you to have an almost bulletproof router, with a constant connection to the Internet. This helps you keep your LAN connected to the Internet at all times, and helps keep your server up and running if you host from your home or small business. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

The dual WAN ports are not the only exciting thing about this router. The router also includes a 9 pin serial port for an analog modem or ISDN modem for another backup, and this port can also be used for configuration of the router from a terminal program such as Hyperterm. The modem backup is one of our favorite features of any router, since if your Cable or DSL connection goes down, you don't have to rewire your network to get back online with the integrated modem backup. Another plus is the fast routing speed. The Nexland Pro800 Turbo is very fast, and Nexland claims that it routes up to 8Mbps bi-directional, and we could tell with a few file transfers that this baby is speedy.

The Pro800 Turbo is a sleek unit, and measures approximately 1" high, 4" deep, and 8" wide. There are no heat slots on the top, making stacking possible. The unit runs very cool compared to some SOHO routers. On the front, the router has an 8 port switch, 2 WAN ports for 2 external Internet connections, and several sets of LED's for the LAN link/activity and duplex, as well as LED's for power, error, LAN/WAN transmit/receive, and a serial port active LED. The power adapter is a standard 9 Volt AC/DC converter, used with most routers, switches, and other devices in this class. The box also includes a CD with docs, a 10 user Axcent RaptorMobile VPN client license, and adobe acrobat reader for the docs. We also liked that Nexland bundles an RJ-45 Ethernet cable, and a 9 Pin null modem cable for configuring your router via a terminal interface instead of using the web config.

Dynamic DNS is also integrated into the Nexland router

The Pro800 Turbo also includes some handy features such DMZ, a nice option for custom virtual servers, and other features like Dynamic DNS (DDNS). The DDNS features allows you to run your own domain name such as yourowncompany.com even if you have a Dynamic IP address. This makes it simple to host your own domain name, including hosting your own web, ftp, and mail servers, and even game servers. The main DDNS function is powered by TZO.COM - the reliable dynamic DNS service. TZO.COM has many features and services that the other DDNS providers don't, and their reliability is top notch, making them the most popular Dynamic DNS service.

Overall, the Nexland Pro800 Turbo has an impressive price and some impressive features. With it's excellent security options, and the dual WAN ports, this router has a feature set that is hard to beat. We love the security minded feature set as well, and hope that more SOHO routers follow in Nexland's path and provide security and redundancy for a low price.

Here are some of the features of the Nexland Pro800 Turbo:

- Easy setup using any browser, flexible Virtual Servers
- (2) WAN ports for dual external networks, offers high availability
- Includes RJ-45 cable and null modem cable for configuration

- Fast routing speeds, rock solid stability, small and compact
- NAT supports 253 internal users, extensive port mapping
- Supports all clients, Windows, Mac, Linux
- Excellent Documentation included, Printed and CD versions

- IPSec, PPTP, L2TP and many more flexible VPN/Security options
- Backup analog/ISDN modem connection for a 2nd backup option
- Configuration from null modem cable allows more flexible setup

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars - The ISB Pro800 Turbo from Nexland is one of the lowest priced, highest quality SOHO routers on the market!
Pros:
Dual WAN ports, fast, excellent price, platform independent, super easy setup, flawless performance and reliability, high availability broadband at a low price - the only router of its's kind in this class.
Cons:
We had to look hard to find something we didn't like about this router. The only thing we would wish for is more advanced teaming and balancing on the WAN ports. We would love a WAN latency feature, where if one connection slowed down to a certain threshold, that it would redirect all traffic to the alternate WAN.
