WIRELESS CDPD SERVICE PROVIDED BY WISP, INC. www.BeWireless.com

The
joys of Wireless. Wireless Internet is here now, and for many, it's
an affordable solution for those who need to be connected to the net
24 hours a day.
We first discovered Wireless CDPD Internet service in our search for
better connectivity. We dug up some old CDPD modems on an auction
site, and signed up with a WISP Service Plan (Wireless ISP) on their
website at www.BeWireless.com
The Wireless modems range in prices from $279 to $549, and come in
both PCMCIA, External Serial as well as Minstrel modems for 3com Palm
and other handhelds. Installing the modem is just as simple as installing
an everyday 56K modem; install the driver and you are done.
The service plans start at $9.95 per month (Limited data), and basic
regional access with unlimited data for a mere $39.95 per month. This
is the service that we use, and nothing beats it! Here in New England,
winters clog the highways, and the wireless modem comes in handy for
doing email in traffic jams and emergencies...

Overall,
CDPD Wireless Internet Service is not for everyone, and some may have
trouble putting up with the lack of speed that they may be used to
with their 56K modem. There are always those who want to have access
to their Email and other Internet Enabled Apps wherever they are,
and to that crowd, it's priceless.
Wireless Internet service gives you the freedom to travel and still
be connected and available almost anywhere. Many Airports and major
metropolitan areas in the US are wired for CDPD, but before signing
up with service from any CDPD provider, you should look at come CDPD
Maps and contact CDPD providers like ATT and Bell Atlantic to find
out what is available in your area of the country. Check out http://www.wirelessdata.org
while you are at it, they have some fairly recent CDPD maps, but its
always best to call from my experience...
If you are a techno freak like me, and want to have constant access
to the Internet, without wires an heavy access fees, then an unlimited
CDPD plan from WISP is for you. Check them out, you won't regret it!

TIPS for using CDPD:
* CDPD is fairly widespread in major metropolitan areas, mainly
on the East Coast. You can choose the exact service plan that fits
your needs,
* Some users with old SLIP CDPD modems will have slower transfer
rates than users with newer CDPD modems like the Merlin pictured
on the top of this page. These newer modems are PPP, making the
connection more efficient and faster.
* The Wireless Modem Acceleration software provided by WISP is powered
by Venturi. This Venturi software acts as a local proxy, intercepting
the Wireless data and using advanced image and data compression
software, speeds up the connection considerably. Many users, including
myself, were amazed at the speed increase - close to 33.6 and higher!
* Another trick to speeding things up is to TURN OFF IMAGES in your
browser. If there is an image on a website that you do want to see,
a simple Right Click - show image - will show just that one image.
This saves precious time when browsing the web via wireless.
