Zoom has been a long time name in analog modems, and they
have recently joined the cable and DSL marketplace. Before we dive
into the Zoom cable modem review, we want to take a few paragraphs
to brush you up on DOCSIS and explain what it is and why it is important
to you.
What is DOCSIS? DOCSIS stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface
Specification allows interoperability among cable modem providers,
or in plain English, it's a cable modem standard so stuff works together.
DOCSIS helped pave the way for cable modems to become available on
the local CompUSA shelf. Without a standard of interoperability, consumers
would be stuck with a proprietary cable modem if they moved or switched
to DSL. With DOCSIS, most major cable ISP's across the country use
DOCSIS compliant networks, so your cable modem can be sold or use
on other networks with no special configuration.
Many consumers would rather buy a cable modem outright than rent it
from the ISP. Typically, if you purchase a cable modem, the purchase
pays for itself in a year or two. If you want to get away from paying
extra money to the cable ISP, buying your own cable modem is a snap
and a great way to save money. Keep in mind that some ISP's want you
to "register" the cable modem on their network. When you
purchase your own cable modem, call your cable company and give them
the new MAC address of your new cable modem. The MAC address is usually
located on a white sticker on the back or on the bottom of the modem
itself.
The Zoom 5041 cable modem can be used with USB or with a standard
Ethernet cable. The USB interface is very simple and easy and requires
no Ethernet cable or Ethernet adapter in the PC. The addition of USB
to a cable modem makes the installers job very easy, since a PC does
not need to be opened up and no Ethernet card is required. We like
this feature, since anyone can now install the cable modem.
The modem is a small and sleek unit, approx. 7.5" wide, 5.5"
deep, and 1" high. We really liked the variable mounting features,
from hanging options to using the included stand. The Zoom 5041 connected
to our Charter cable modem network within 30 seconds after we plugged
it in. One thing we really didn't like was the LED's, since they were
very bright and seemed to bleed light into LED's that were not meant
to be illuminated.
Overall, the Zoom 5041 USB/Ethernet cable modem is solid, fast and
at a great price. The Zoom 5041 never skipped a beat on our network,
and we think you'll be happy with any of the Zoom cable modems.
